Why is there no check box for events ? Like for a task, this would indicate that the event took place and ended.

The tasks are goal oriented activities and that is why there is only the due time/date (e.g. water the plants, shopping list etc.). You can mark them as done. Contrary to the events, which focus on time. That is why you can set the start and end time and the have duration. This is what tells the two types of entries apart and currently we do not plan to change their character.
If you want to mark your finished events somehow, please use emoticons or change the event color to spot it.
